Labor’s health spokesman has slammed the Prime Minister over hotel quarantine, saying Scott Morrison has “done nothing” and urged him “to fix this mess”.
It comes as health authorities in NSW and Western Australia investigate virus leaks in quarantine hotels after three separate incidents last week of guests becoming infected by other guests.
Shadow Health Minister Mark Butler said authorities were “examining options” for an open air Howard Springs-type quarantine facility to avoid transmission of the virus inside hotels.
“Hotel quarantine was a relatively short to medium term option to deal with Australians needing to come back home. It is not a long-term option,” he told reporters on Monday.
“People are realising we need something other than hotel quarantine and, frankly, Scott Morrison was briefed on that need as far back as last year.
“He has done nothing to further it. It is his responsibility quarantine. It is his job to fix this mess.”
The latest virus leak in a quarantine hotel was revealed on Thursday in Perth where two people contracted the virus while quarantining.
