The NSW Treasurer has said he’s “open” to making public transport free on Mondays and Fridays in order to tempt more people to go downtown.
Dominic Perrottet was speaking after a summit on the future of the Sydney CBD where government ministers and other officials received feedback from business leaders on how to get people to come back to the inner city after the coronavirus pandemic.
He said Mondays and Fridays had less commuters using trains and he would not rule out incentivising ridership by making public transport free on those days.
“I’m very open to looking at ways we can incentivise public transport, particularly on Fridays,” he said.
“It clearly came through today, and as I said, we’ll look at it.”

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore indicated she was also supportive of the idea.
“We can make public transport more accessible,” she said.
“It’s a topic that was discussed very thoroughly today, and I know the Treasurer is going to take that back to the (Transport) Minister…
