The land of Odisha nurtured Buddhism for centuries. It is here that the Emperor Ashoka embraced the religion; it was in Odisha that the Mahayana and Tantric schools of Buddhism evolved; it was from her shores that the religion spread to distant lands. Today, the many stunning ruins of Buddhist monasteries spread across the state stand testimony to the importance Buddhism had in this region. Many of these ruins are located in particularly scenic parts of Odisha, atop verdant hills, and are mostly within easy driving distance from major tourist spots like Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark. But at the Buddhist sites you will find few tourists. As you walk through once-bustling monasteries and Buddhist schools and gaze at the impressive sculptures and statues, you will be reminded of how transient we all are.
