The wildlife sanctuary was recognized in 1972 and came under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The Wild Ass Sanctuary is also considered as a heritage of Gujarat and houses a wildlife population of the caracal, desert fox, flamingo, crane, and black cobra, and, of course, the Indian wild ass.
