Responsible for streamlining liquor pricing mechanism, Delhi’s finance and excise committee has put forth suggestions that include an allowance to restaurants and clubs to stay open till 3am, serving full bottles on tables, and many more.
Set up by Delhi’s deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia to recover state revenues, the committee is in charge of augmenting excise revenue, regulating malpractices, assuring equitable access, and assisting the government in formulating business policies.
The latest in their list of recommendations is reducing the minimum age required to drink at the bar from 25 to 21 years, permitting establishments to purchase liquor from retailers, and rationalising license fees for bars based on their location.
Arrangements were further proposed to allow restaurants with a valid fire safety certificate to get a bar license, build more liquor serving counters, store liquor anywhere on the premises and do away with the process of issuing a public notice in the locality to record objections before receiving liquor license.
Currently in its feedback stage, the report will be drafted as a policy and sent to the Delhi cabinet for approval. Once approved, the policy will bring changes in the existing excise rules in the capital.
