Whether you’re beginning or ending a kayak, train, car, walk or bike trail journey, or stopping to recharge your batteries along the way, you can’t go past the Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre, which opened in September.

Admittedly, I was doing none of those things when I dropped in recently — I merely wanted to see this dazzling new centre, about which I’d heard so much.

I was not disappointed. WA’s first purpose-built trails centre, the DTVC is located just across from the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway and right near the skate park, pump track and playground, and is perfectly placed to service not just the Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail but also the vast and rapidly expanding Murray Valley Trail Network.

Outside, there are superb toilets (no, really — trust me), hot showers and washbasins with large mirrors, a laundromat, facilities for washing down bikes, and lockers…
