The onsen pool at HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO

It may seem strange at first: taking off your clothes, scrubbing thoroughly and then entering a bath of mineral hot springs alongside total strangers. But in these onsen baths in Japan, there is no sense of embarrassment, just the sense of relaxation and healing from the mineral rich waters. And there’s usually a soothing view to go along with it—snow covered mountains, flowing rivers.

There are hundreds of onsens scattered through Japan, usually attached to a ryokan surrounded by those pastoral views. But guests staying in the center of Kyoto can also now take part in onsen culture due to the opening last month of HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, a member of The Luxury Collection and the only hotel in the city center that has its own mineral spring. The hotel also has an ancient aspect as the former home of the aristocratic Mitsui family with a 300 year old gate known as the Kajiimiya Gate serving as the entrance to welcome guests. It is also surrounded by landmarks of the city including the 17th-century UNESCO World Heritage-listed Nijo Castle across the street.
